Advertisement for lamp oil, Dipam oil. The music was composed by Vishal Chandrashekhar and I played the Flute in this ad. The tune is set in the raga Kalyani (of Carnatic) or equivalently Yaman (of Hindustani) and to a rhythm cycle of 7/8. This rhythm cycle is called Misra chapu in carnatic music and equivalently Rupaktaal in Hindustani.

The song is set in the pitch ‘D’, ie. the ‘Sa’ is set to the western note of D.

The kalyani scale is as follows

Arohanam(ascending)        : S R2 G3 M2 P D2 N3 S’ (D E F# G# A B C# D’)

Avarohanam(descending) : S’ N3 D2 P M2 G3 R2 S (D’ C# B A G# F# E D)
