ArOhanam      : The ascending scale of a rAgA. [1]

AvarOhanam  : The descending scale of a rAgA. [1]

bAnsurI            : Indian Bamboo Flute [1]

bHairav            : Hindustani Raga equivalent to Carnatic Raga, mAyAmAlavagowlA [1], [2]

bollywood        : Indian hindi film industry is known thus.

carnAtic           : English name for ‘karnataka-shAstrEeya-sangEetham’; South Indian Classical music genre

chArukEsi       : A raga name, common in carnatic and hindustani genres.[1], [2]

dHarmavatI : A cArnAtic Raga. [1]

gamakA       : The ornamentaion-like oscillation associated with a swara. [1]

H

hindOlam   : A carnAtic raga name, equivalent to mAlkauns of HindustAni.

hindustAni : The North Indian Classical music genre is known thus.

ilayarAjA    : A great Indian cine-music composer, director.

J

janyA          : Sanskrit word meaning ‘derived’, One classification of Ragas.[1]

K

kArunyA    : Sanskrit word meaning, pity, sympathy, kindness.

kramA        : Sanskrit for Order, sequence.

L

Lalgudi      : A district in South India, made famous by Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, a great carnatic violin artiste. Used synonymously to him.

Lalgudi Jayaraman : A great Indian carnatic violinist, composer, musician and musicologist. [1]

LGJ            : Abbreviation for Lalgudi G Jayaraman

mAyAmAlavagowlA  : A carnatic music raga, equivalent to the hindustani raga Bhairav.[1], [2]

melakArthA  : A classification of a carnatic raga. [1]

MS Subbulakshmi : A great south Indian carnatic female vocalist. Honoured with the highest civilian award for service to music by Indian Govt.

Mudduswamy Dikshitar  : A great composer of Carnatic Music. One among the Trinity of Indian Music. [1]

nAdaswaram  : A south Indian classical/folk instrument. [1]

Nedunuri Krishnamurthy  : A great carnatic male vocalist.

PurandaradAsA    : A great saint composer, considered the father of carnatic music.

ranjanI     : A carnatic music rAgA. [1], [2]

S

sampOornA   : sanskrit for Complete. A rAgA can be classified as a sampOorna Raga. [1]

saptaswarA   : The seven notes, Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni are collectively called so. [1]

sArangI         : An Indian string based instrument, in a way similar to the western violin.

swarA            : will give info later…..

syAmA sAstry : A great south Indian composer, one of the Trinity of Indian Music. [1]

Thyagaraja    : A great saint composer, one of the Trinity of Indian Music. [1]

Todi                : Name of a raga in both carnatic and hindustani music genres. Though, they are different rAgAs that share the same name.

Tulsi               : A plant which is considered auspicious in India. Has medicinal values.

Ustad Sultan Khan    : A great North Indian sArangI maestro.

vakrA     : sanskrit for crooked, not-straight. [1]
